18 Montessori activities for travelling with kids

Montessori activites for travelling

With summer coming up in full speed, I figured that this would be the perfect time to present to you the ultimate list of Montessori activities for travelling with kids. I've consolidated a few of my ideas along with ideas from other Montessori mamas like myself.

That list was pretty much endless, so I've picked out the super fun ones that are a success. I hope that this post inspires you to implement a few into your travelling. It will maintain two things:
1. Your kids busy
2. Your sanity

It's basically a win-win!

It's important to note when planning which activities to present to your child, you select activities that interest them and are at their age level. I recommend dedicating a backpack specifically for your Montessori travelling activities.

Here are a few fantastic ones:

*Side note: A small tray could be taken to set on your child's lap to make doing activities easier. It also helps with keeping loose pieces in one place. I place each activity in a sealable pouch.

The List:

1. Beading - Wooden beads and string. You can substitute with any beads. The size of the beads would vary on your child's age.

2. Shoe lacing board - You can buy them in-store or create your own with cardstock/cardboard paper and shoelace or you can purchase it from my shop.

3. Travel bingo printable - This is fun if you have other kids or you are able to play along. See who can cross off the items that are in your surrounding and shout bingo first.

4. Scavenger hunt printable - Similar to travel bingo but is more geared towards solo playing but can be used with others.

5. Binoculars - Super cool for older kids.

6. PlayDoh and PlayDohmats - Your child can create wonderful things for hours on end with this.

7. Small puzzles - Limit the number of pieces (trust me, you do not want to be scrambling finding pieces or picking up pieces every few minutes).

8. Stickers and/or sticker book - Choose stickers based on a theme that interests your child or based on travelling. So for example for boys: dinosaurs and girls: Peppa pig.

9. Crayons and colouring book - For younger kids the mess-free colouring books/paper and mess-free markers are a good choice. You will have less to clean up! I found this cool pack, check it out.

10. A doodle kit - Aqua doodle or a magnetic doodle board are my top picks.

11. Figurines - Animals, cars, people etc. Basically whatever interests your child. You can also choose to bring along a book that is of the same theme.

12. Drawing pad, pencils (2-3 of them) and an eraser.

13. Travel themed books - pocket-sized if possible.

14. Lego Kit - This is basically a kit with a lego building plate and lego pieces that your child can use to build their creations.

15. Stacking cups - For younger kids.

16. Kid-friendly dominoes - Your kids can play alone or play with anyone else.

17. Wooden fishing game - This will keep them occupied for a while as they will need to concentrate.

18. A small surprise new toy - (I keep this for the end in case my child gets fed up with the activities on super long trips) - This can be anything that you want.

I hope that you enjoyed this post. I wish you a safe and peaceful journey.
